new spuds - wire worm

Picked our first spuds and guess what the first plant had wire worm in them, dug the rest of the row and they were fine, look great:), just hope the main crop are ok,the land the earlies went in was grassed before and so was the main bit, but not to such a great extent, worried now >:(

One of the green manures, vetch or something helps clear wireworm, as they break the breeding cycle somehow... presumably someone else will know what I am on about!

right once our earlies are up by next month will get some down, where can i buy them from?

Chase Organic catalogue has a range, but hold fire it might not be vetch I have an outbreak of braindeath at the moment...

Wireworm is a problem you always get where grass has recently been dug out. It does go in the end, after about five years, but meanwhile try different varieties, as some are more affected than others. Red Duke of York was particularly bad when I tried it; the spuds came out looking like sponges.

Never had any trouble with red dukes on any of my five allotments Rob...
with that tough skin I'm surprised anything can get in!
