I planted some tomato and chilli seeds in my propagator and the soil has gone all furry.  What is this! ?

its mould.

comes from using non-sterile compost in a warm wet environment, which is why some people blast theirs in the microwave or jeyes fluid it to death before sowing. I just pick the mouldy bits off, complain at it (whilst crooning soothing words to the seedlings ;D ) and hope for the best. so far, no obvious problems from this.

So ill pick it off then..  Thanks!

Im using multi purpose compost as thats all I could find in the shop. Is that oK?

Should be unless you intend to grow in it all season, MP compost hasn't as much body as a loam based Potting Compost and will be exhausted of nutrients in less than 6 weeks... ok for starting off things to plant out..
;D
