shallots

This is probably a very stupid question (even by my own low standards) but are shallot sets basically the same as actual shallots? Last year I planted shallot sets and they were very successful. Having some left from the crop this year, I've planted them out presuming them to 'work' in a similar way to garlic. Despite the possible stupidity of the question, I'd like to feel that it deserves an answer.  ;D

They'll work fine. Plant the best not the worst for best results!

Not a stupid question at all. As I see it, shallots sets have been grown from seed, so they are a first generation plant. When planted they will grow to produce the familiar clusters of shallot bulbs/cloves. These bulbs can be replanted to continue the cycle and produce more shallots. What I cannot say though, is whether these bulbs will have the same vigour as the original sets, as I have not been successful with replanting ... However if you choose large bulbs, then these should be stronger as Robert says ...
