growing strawberries

I'm thinking of growing some strawberries on my new allotment, any advice would be most helpful,where are the best (cheapest) places to buy them, what are the sweetest varieties,when should I plant them (Scotland)
will I get fruit this year, how many runners will I get from each plant (to increase my stock for next year? if you have any tips i would be most grateful........regards....VEGGIE
