Why does the book say "dont buy wine varieties" - what is the problem?

I bought one each of these last year - both grew fine - no grapes last year but then after buying them they did sit in the shed until April - I expect them to go well this year.

The reason for not buying wine varieties is that they are no good for eating - wines need more tannin (which is bitter - Cabernet Sauvignon) and acidity to enable them to age and sop them being alcoholic ribena. Wine varieties have these which is great for wine but rubbish for eating - they'll taste sharp and probably very bitter. Cabernet will not ripen in the UK I shouldn't think - Sauvignon stands a good chance in a good year in a sheltered spot in warm soil!
