Just been given some free pikant shallot sets, never grown them before so when can they go in and what can I expect in terms of yield and flavour?

Thanks

I grew these last year, but planted them a bit late - April I think. The taste was good, and they split into roughly 8/10 bulbs. They keep well too, I am still using them.

Thanks Jenny

So If I pop them in around March time they should be happy enough here is Sussex.

Hope so, as I'm doing the same again this year - lots of changes on my allotment, and little veg planted out yet!

Meg

Far more hardy than onions I would think they could go in now. See what everyone else says.

Hi all
I popped my Pikant in last Sunday along with some garlic cloves and red onion sets.
I figured they could go in the same time as the other alliums.  Previous onion sets and garlic went in in November and they are all popping their little stems up now.

Find out soon enough if I was wrong....... :-\

I grew them for 2 or 3 years and put them in about this time. The yield and taste were OK but the shallots themselves were often a bit small. I prefer the longnor I put in last year.
