Seeds sprouting inside pumpkin

I store most of my pumpkins and gourds in the house over the winter and noticed that one was starting to go mouldy - a large patch on the side. I thought I'd better save what I could, so I cut into it. There are roots and shoots everywhere! It looks as if half the seeds have started to grow, inside the pumpkin!  :o

Has anyone ever come across this before? I was amazed. I think I'll put it in the greenhouse and see how the seeds grow on, as they've already started.

Yes, it has happened a few times both with home grown and shop bought squash. I never tried growing on (the whole tangled mass looked too sinister!) but would love to know how your plantlets do!

Rowan

It does look sinister, doesn't it but I think I'll give it a try anyway. The tops of the shoots were actually green (lime yellow green) even inside the pumpkin!

I'll definitely keep you updated. Perhaps a few photos, if I can get the hang of posting them.

It's very common, peppers are very prone to it & tomatoes do it too

Would love some Photo,s please.....very interesting!!
Sometimes its better to listen than to talk

Ok, Tulip, I'll give it a go. The two halves of the pumpkin are now in pots in the greenhouse.

I didn't realise tomatoes would do it, too. I still have one or two left over from last year but as far as I know nothing's sprouting inside them. I'll cut into one and find out!
