Probably the best footballer Ive ever seen play the game. Sorry to hear of his death, sad he retired aged only 26.

Sad news   :(     ............... but what a joy to watch all the replays of his fantastic footballing skills.  ( and what beautiful Irish eyes!  ;) )

Very sads new. May God rest his soul.  He was such a talented man. It is also a very sad day because this did not need to be.

May he now rest in peace.  If only he had taken his second chance and used it wisely.

Georgie

George Best is my all time favourite footballer - why do you think I've adopted the name Georgie on these boards?  He was the reason I started supporting Manchester United in the middle 1960's (and I've stuck with them through thick and thin ever since) and whereas other gals had pop star pics plastered on their walls - Donny Osmond for instance I ask you ;) - my walls were covered in pics of Georgie carefully cut out of Fab 208 and the like.

He was a genius and the fact that after relatively few years of professional football he's still remembered with such affection today is a fitting tribute.  Alcoholism is an illness and I guess he was never cured.  They didn't get the help and guidance our young players get today in George's time and I guess I'm pretty angry about that.

Anyway George, here's to you mate.  You gave so many people so much pleasure.  So long, and thanks for all the goals.

What record was that, Wardy, don't recall.

I guess when all said and done he lived his life the way he wanted to and doesn't seem to have made enemies - a sporting genius.

Wardy, Georgie - don't know if you can still get the song(s) you remember from this site but worth a try?

Equality isn't everyone being the same, equality is recognising that being different is normal.

Can I just say that I thought West Ham did an absolutely superb job today in their fitting tribute to George Best.  My congratulations and gratitude to all concerned.  It was so moving, the tears flowed at last.
