Hey Chris, gorgeous pic! I just let mine self seed everywhere, not sure about root cuttings, have never tried cos they seem to get on with it themselves!

If they are Nigella,  then they are annuals and grow from seed only. What are the leaves like, feathers?
If they are Centaurea then splitting the plant is dead easy. Do it in Spring .
Gardening is the great leveller.

Looks like the perennial cornflower to me. Can't currently think of it's other name. It may come back to me later.

Mine seems to be happily clumping up so I reckon you could split it at some point. It keeps popping up in my non-gardening neighbour's front garden, despite them yanking it out. So it seems like a pretty tough cookie.

great picture too!
gone to pot :D
