rotten turnips and cabbage

One of my savoy cabbages was rotten from the base of the head up with round the core and al but a few outer leaves looking like they had composted.

A similar thing has happened to some turnips that seem have to have rotted from the tips down and inside while neighbouring roots are fine.

Can someone tell me why and if there is anything I can do to stop it in future.

Thanks Iain

Sounds to me like some insect or other, maybe cabbage white butterfly larvae, has been at them early on in the growth, and then a bacterial rot has got a foothold on the damaged portions.
Not much you can do except the normal covering with mesh to stop them being attacked by insects - unless you want to spray regularly - fortunately it sounds like you have only a few affected. You can't do much about the rot once it sets in.

You may wish to check "Another potato problem" started by premtal on this board. I have mentioned another potential cause of your problem there. I would agree with Jenny, for what that is worth, that the rot is a secondary symptom.

Thanks - will go have a look and to everyone else that responded - even if not brilliant news!  Iain
