A friend's been given 12 new summer-fruiting canes & wants to replace the old canes he has in his fruit cage with these. His old ones are healthy but old with no signs of virus, etc. The new ones come from a reputable source.

Question is............can he plant the new canes where he's taken out the old - after, presumably, enriching the soil?

Many thanks for your thoughts - 'Lishka

http://www.organicgardening.org.uk/factsheets/ftm3.php indicates it's not advisable if the previous canes were unhealthy.  I think I have read elsewhere that it's not a good idea anyway.  Sorry not much help I know.

Many thanks for the link, Jill - it pretty well confirmed the conclusion we'd come to anyway.

Because the old canes aren't diseased in any way and because available space is limited in his fruit cage, think he'll go along the option of double-digging, renewing the soil, re-planting and hoping for the best!

But I'll print out the link you gave and the decision will be his. Very many thanks for the time/trouble you took - Lishka
