Hi David,
You could try cutting it down and covering it up with compost or straw and see what happends.
Mums friend use to show and he would dig them up when the first frosts came and store the stools ( roots) in pots or boxes of compost and let them dry out think he layed them on their sides for a couple of weeks then in spring when they started to shoot would take cuttings to increase his stocks and these would make better plants?
Then Plant them out when all danger of frost has passed.
Just like you would do a Dailia tuber.
hope this helps.

Agree, dig up before a hard frost arrives, aftering cutting back the folliage. You end up with approx a 10" main stalk. Place these in a frost free spot, I use an un heated greenhouse.

They start to make new buds in Feb/March. Let these get to about 4inches and take them as cuttings for new plants next year. You should be able to get 4 or 5 cuttings per stool.

See here for more details.

Many thanks for the comments. It is very kind of you.

The time at the allotment is dictated by the seasons. At the moment it is about 2 or 3 hours at the weekend. In the summer I will go there most evenings for an hour just to water and tidy up. In the depth of winter it is 30 mins to go and dig parsnips or pick sprouts. I do get a little bit of help from the wife as she will go and pick flowers and produce with the kids when she needs them in the week.

The blog only cover my new plot I took in hand this spring. That one is triangular in shape and about a 3rd of a 10 rod plot. I also have another half plot which was derelict 18 months ago but is now in full production. The first season was hard work but good preparation cant be beat.
