If I moved my asparagus bed (circa 8 years old and going strong) will I set it back to the equivalant of a new bed and new crowns or will it recover quickly?

Not essential its moved but with a new additional plot it would work far better and just for once I'm trying to plan ahead!

I was told that you are far better off to start again with new crowns as they hate being moved. They do have a massive root system so I would recommend starting over again or leaving them in the origional spot.

I've moved some in past and most have moved OK, I took care not to disturb the roots by forking carefully around them and moving them with a lot of soil using a shovel. I did it about November. The frost had got to the foliage, and I cut it down to leave just 6" pieces so that I knew where the plants were.

You can move anything with care, but some plants take a year or so to recover. Asparagus may well be one of these.

Okay, thanks for that.  Will see how brave I feel although sounds sensible to move just part of the bed just in case.

Sounds sensible. Move half of it, give it a couple of years, and see what happens.
