Great picture Jenny.  Gosh just seen your avatar and you are the spitting image of my aunt.    :o                       I like to stuff a hand full of fallen leaves into the crown where they will rot and fall into the hole in the centre, then in the spring I do the same with half a handful of chicken pellets.  For the winter I wrap mine in fleece and put bubble wrap around the tub that it is in to protect the roots. Its 4 years old now so seems to be thriving with this treatment.
Take time to stop and smell the flowers.

I'd be wary of that Mimi, I put leaves onto the crown of mine before bending leaves over, but they stay dry. There is the danger with chicken pellets that they'll scorch the new growth, I wouldn't have thought it's good to have things fermenting away in the crown of a plant? Around the base, near roots, yes.
Anyhow, if it works for you, fine.
