Is it likely that my sweetcorn is ready? The base is really fat and the silks have gone brown on one of them. I haven't tested for the milky substance yet as I don't want to peel back the leaves. Should I?

I am worried, my silks are brown on a couple of plants, but the cobs don't feel very big at all  :'(

I think the silks go brownish once their pollination window has passed. They don't go really dry brown for a week or two.  Mine are about a1.5 inches in diameter now - and I've been watering them for the past few days as the cobs swell, in order to make sure they get big enough!

I'm just grateful that by accident rather than design I managed to get succession, as I am going to have enough problems getting them in the freezer as it is... I grew 19 plants expecting single cobs and all that have so far flowered have 2 - eep! :o
