I understand that when watering things such as tomatoes you should avoid the leaves.

What about when it rains - as i sit as work it is still rainign and has been all morning.

Should i make a dash home and grab a towel for them!
Keep getting worried that the stuff I grow will taste nasty - or turn out poisonous!

Water on leaves in hot sunshine can lead to local scorching it`s true.

It's more important on ornamentals really, some liquid feeds can badly scorch foliage though

Given the weather that the U.K. is presently experiencing (at least the areas that are getting reported here) I would point out that the combination of heat and moisture on a leaf surface will provide the ideal conditions for fungi to germinate or bacterial spores to establish. This is why it is recommended to avoid getting leaf surfaces wet. If getting moisture on the leaf is unavoidable it is best to water in the morning so that the moisture has the best chance to evaporate before fungi or bacteria can become established.
Rain will physically suppress the spread of either fungal or bacterial spores but if drying conditions following rain are poor infection can take place readily.
