Climber suggestions please.

I have just constructed some steps up to a raised area in the garden, and put an arch in at the top of the steps.

I would like some suggestions for a couple of climbers as I am having a 'blank' day.  Not Ivy or roses (roses don't do well in Cornwall). The site is sunny, can be windy, fantastic soil, moisure retentive, but well drained, we only get a couple of light frosts a year, and these are usually gone by early morning.

Like everything else in the garden, I'm looking for something out of the ordinary, and evergreen and/or scented if I can get it.

I already have Clematis rehderiana, C. napalense, Campsis grandiflora and radicans and Tracleospermum jasminoides, so you may get the idea of the sort of things I like.

Thanks

Twospot Ladybird

What about another Clematis or two. Clematis Armandii are evergreen and scented. C. Cirrhosa is also evergreen. These Clematis like full sun and a free draining soil.

What about Itea ilicifolia. Not a climber but easily trained against wall, trellis etc. Evergreen glossy leaves & long catkin-like flowers in the summer which are  scented. I think it looks lovely.

Palustris

Gardening is the great leveller.

passiflora caerulea????    white flowers with purple centres!   and grows quickly to fill the space!  :P

Agree about the Clematis Armandii - lovely fragrance. With it you could plant a Clematis montana wilsonii - smells of chocolate! Or Akebia Quinata - also smells of chocolate! Neither of these is considered evergreen but if you have a sheltered spot they should retain their leaves.
And judging by the plants you've already mentioned, you can grow some of the less hardy climbers, such as Gelsemium sempervirens, the Carolina jasmine, which has beautifully scented yellow flowers, flushing to orange with age.
Lesson for life:
1. Breathe in     2. Breathe out     3. Repeat

How about Akebia?  Deciduous or evergreen.  Chocolate/purple fragrant flowers followed by long, purple fruits.  Have got one and is satisfyingly fast mover but easy to control!  Definitely a bit different!  And, apart from a few squishable aphids, no real probs! ;D

Thanks all.  Some great suggestions there.  I'm off to tour the local nurseries at the weekend.  I'll let you know what I come back with :)
