http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio/aod/mainframe.shtml?http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio/aod/radio4_aod.shtml?radio4/foodprog - this makes interesting listening, and makes you wonder why many people don't grow their own when you see them in the supermarket picking up packets of salad leaves, etc...

I know, I listened to the prog on the way home on Monday. lettuce is so easy to grow. I've a tub of leaves (free seed packet from KG mag, I thnk) outside of my back door so I can just nip out, pick whatever is required for salad or sandwich and (after washing off the aphids) have unbelivably fresh produce.

Having eaten the real thing from the allotment, I've come to the conclusion that 'fresh' fruit & vegetables from supermarkets aren't fresh, fruit or vegetable at all. Just shrink wrapped colourful junk...

Even the organic stuff has done more travelling than Micheal Palin. What's the point?

I agree TM.  I find it a little incongruous that organic food is offered on supermarket shelves which is billed as being so health for us when possibly irreparable damage has been done to the atmosphere in flying it half way across the globe and the manufacturing of plastic bags to sell it in.  Lance
Getting there - just rather slowly!!

HDRA wanted members last year to do a supermarket watch on organic veg - there were non-organic carrots from Scotland, or organic ones from the middle east.

I just listened to that - very interesting - loved the 2 lettuce recipes that the ausssie chef gave. Must try them.
makes me feel sad though that people all seem to want those bags of ready to eat stuff not seeming to care about what it's been washed in. I mean, how hard is it to grow lettuce - even if it's  in a tub if you've got no garden?  ??? ???

Cheers MV. It was fascinating to hear how many varieties of lettuce are available as standard in French shops.
