I do endorse the need to tackle problems in Africa and think it is great to see this huge upsurge of interest in the continent.  However, I wish there was the same interest in global warming which is already underway.  The G8 are completely burying their heads in the sand by ignoring the problem, particularly the U.S.

The big glaciers are melting, and it is obvious to everyone that weather patterns are changing.  If you have been viewing Spring Watch on TV you will know that it already is affecting the bird kingdom and will continue to.  Those of you living in the South, it has been forcast, will over time not be able to grow the gardens you have at present.  Already we are seeing  new plant, pests and diseases coming over from the warmer countries.

It seems that all the G8 can suggest is increasing the use of nuclear power stations.  How comforting is that?  So I wish that those worthy celebrities could also turn their attention to this huge problem that can only get worse if we don't try tackling it now. Sorry if this sounds like Doom and gloom but it does depress and frustrate me to see how little is being done  :( busy_lizzie.

not comforting at all BL, especially after the latest news from Sellafield.  Isn't the idea of more nuclear stations because they are carbon neutral and therefore do not contribute to global warming in the way that traditional power stations do?  If only the development of natural energy had been taken seriously 20-30 years ago.  The warnings have been given since way before then.  The 80s was the first surge in average consumers getting involved in buying recycling products etc., but the 'alternative' route for energy was seen as too wayout.  I'm looking into swapping to a 'green' energy provider, but it doesn't seem to be that simple.  I understand that all energy companies have a quote of renewable energy they have to meet, and often the green ones, having green energy to spare, simply sell their spare quota to the non-greens to save them having to bother!  I'm sure that's a fairly simplified version but trying to do the best thing is a minefield!

Well, going to sound eccentric here, but if the worst does come to the worse, over thousands of years perhaps the planet will be able to shake off the biggest pests of all!! Us! It may be doom and gloom for us, but I like to think that over ions, the damage we've inflicted will put itself right.  After all, we are but a blip on the time scale of earth's evolution. But i think we should hang our heads in shame over the number of species of life that have become extinct through our actions.  Lottie
