Where to get timber in S Yorkshire
« on: January 18, 2010, 20:23:57 »
Hiya,

1st post.

We have just been offered an allotment near to where we live, we have been on the list for 18 months and its finally come good.  It is a brand new patch (they are extending the allotments) so will need to design the lay out.  One definate is that we want chickens.  Been doing some reseaching online and we have decided against buying a "ready made" chicken coop and run.  After looking at a number of photos online i have decided i want to make my own large run out of Machine Rounded Timber posts and heavy duty chicken wire.  Ive been looking all over and cant find anywhere in the North (near to us) that supplies fence posts like i want - essentially 6 foot long and rounded.  There are plenty of places down south for like a quid each.

Does any one know of anywhere that sells them at a reasonable cost in the South Yorkshire area?

Thanks

I have heard from a few people that the Shipyard in Swinton is the place to go, next to the canal. Never used it myself, but I intend to at some point this year.

And welcome to the site.  :)

Thanks for the quick replies.

As per the Shipyard in Swinton, do you have anymore details? Address, website etc?

Thanks

They don't seem to be listed anywhere. This might be of some help, but only if you know Swinton:

If coming into Swinton from Mexborough, go over the hump-backed bridge over the canal and turn left immediately after the bridge, and follow the track for several hundred yards.

If coming down the hill the other way from Wath, go under the railway bridge then turn right down Broomville Street.

http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?hl=en&client=firefox-a&rls=org.mozilla:en-GB:official&hs=YcJ&q=Swinton%20mexborough&um=1&ie=UTF-8&sa=N&tab=wl   is as close as I can get.

Edit: that only seems to work properly in Firefox. Try searching Google Maps for Broomville Street, Swinton, Mexborough.

Hey
We are in Morley nr Leeds and have just done the fencing on our new plot.
I went to Job Earnshaws, not far off jct 39 M1

http://www.jebtesting.jobearnshaw.com/equestrian.php

if you look at the stakes section and they do 8' x 3-4" posts at £2.95
I just bought 20 and have driven them 2' into the ground and they are solid and very good quality.
