A while back I was peering into the pond behind the site when  spotted a newt tadpole. You can tell because they're brown, newt shaped, and have external gills.

i think the greater spotted ones are now protected - if you have them in your pond you're not allowed to move them

That's Great Crested. Common and palmate newts are still fairly common.

When they find somewhere they like, they take over.

Last week I was tidying up in the garden.

- pulled up the dead leaves from a geranium, newts underneath - destruction of habitat
- Picked up a handfull of leaves - newt in them.  If it was playing dead, handling a protected animal, if it really was dead, destruction of a protected animal.
- moved two to safety as cat suddenly realised I was making the hunt easy - handling of protected species, removal of protected species from habitat ( astilbe). Swearing at non protected cat.

gave up and went in for a brew.  D*&n Netwts

Ooh lovely! I saw one in our pond a couple of years ago (in a plant I was splitting) never seen any since sadly.
