Free Compost
« on: October 15, 2008, 10:42:03 »
Not sure if this is the right thread or not!
Anyway, just wanted to spread the word about my windfall of compost!

My friend delivers goods for a local garden centre, and they approached him and asked him if he knew anybody who had an allotment.
Basically, they have a large amount of waste that they get charged for, and this includes waste from the garden centre which they wanted to recycle.
They fill those big white builders bags full of the split bags of compost etc., and my mate drops it off for me.  So far, I've filled 2 new raised beds.

The stuff is mainly split bags of compost that they cannot sell (obviously), and they have put the odd dying plant in there, which I just compost.  They also gave me spare plastic pots as well.
It may be worth approaching your local garden centres to see if you can set up such a scheme.
I feel that it benefits all concerned, as they reduce their waste, I (and my collegues) get free compost, and my friend who delivers gets an Indian meal on a regular basis!
Surely deeds like this make the world run a little bit smoother?

I've seen split bags for sale before now, just at a reduced price. (But then I do live in Yorkshire. ;D)
