Shallots - can I use my own?
« on: December 30, 2006, 18:36:23 »
Hello - I have a quick question about shallots. Can I use my stored shallots and just replant them back in the ground? I assume they would split again and provide more shallots? I realise it's best to buy virus free seeds but I've been replanting my garlic and that seems to be fine. Can I do the same with shallots?

Any advice much appreciated.
Thanks

save the best and biggest from one year to plant for the next. Don't eat the biggest and save the runts, or you'll end up growing nothing but runts.

No argument, Robert, but there are always two sides to the coin.

Garlic, I would agree, but happened upon this the other day : RHS quote - "When selecting untreated sets, choose smaller bulbs over large ones, as smaller bulbs may be more resistant to bolting (they are less mature, so have less well developed flower buds)."

And this (US University) "Sort sets into those large than a dime and those smaller. Plant the larger sets for green onions and plant the smaller ones with adequate spacing: they'll produce bigger onions."

Clever little things!!

Yes - but don't know. The first quote applied to both Onions & Shallots: the second just to Onions.
