going to put some fleece over the top of the cloche today over mine.

Think we should aim at some the size of a 50 pence piece to count as acceptable.

I'm game but what are the rules?  ::)

As Glosterwomble says "Is it size" or total weight of crop per spud planted?

And what is the last planting day to be in the running?

I'll try half a dozen Lady Christie in cold greenhouse border. Just to see if there is any difference  :)  They will be straight out of bag and not prechitted.

Why not plant six spuds by next weekend and pull them all say 1st June and compare the total weight of crop?

Is anyone going to have a go at spuds in a tub too?  ;D

Post by: tonybloke on February 14, 2009, 09:57:34
do they have to be in the ground or can we grow them in tubs in a heated greenhouse? (some of the folk on here have got access to heated structures)
I Always plant a few in a coldframe, so I can have new spuds on my birfday (june 7) but if I can use heat, I'll grow some @ college ;)

Right sorry I just jumped in because RK had planted on the 13th, could be unlucky RK.  :(   Right they have to be planted on the lottie, garden, tubs, pollytunnel, coldframe or Cold greenhouse or the like, no heat then everyone has a fair chance, the sooner the better I'm aiming for Tommorow covering with large bottle cloches. So we'll see who has the first meal for two on the table, size will be argueable so no smaller than a tabletennis ball but hey its only a bit of fun.  ;D ;D ;D

Do they have to be panted out now in the freezing ground, or can I let them chit in a luke warm (3-8 deg C) porch for a couple of weeks ?

I've just come back from the lottie, the grounds very wet so I've turned it over a bit and put two plastic poly clches over the area I'm planting in, I've also emptied out a bit of the plastic toy tub that I had carrots in last year and added some rotted manure and placed some glass on top as a back up, the sun is out here and its quite a pleasant day, tommorow I'm going to plant them.  ;D ;D ;D

Anyone can join in, it's just a bit of fun, get them in as soon as you want, you may want to put some plastic down for a few weeks to warm the soil or choose to put them straight in with the aid of cloches, bubblewrap, plastic, fleece or anything you have to try and pit your wits against the weather and remember when they appear protect against the frosts and its the first to have a decent size meal for two on the plate and no Barnowl Oct planting don't count.  ;D ;D ;D

Darn sarth indeed, N London, everyone can play and put them in when you want ,you may benefit from later planting, but don't put tooo many in unless you can afford to loose them, no heat just cold frames, buckets, bags, tubs, plastic, bubblewrap etc. Best of British aaand keep on spuding.        ;D ;D ;D

I'm late this year - I've normally planted a few earlies by now. But we've got some children coming from the nearby Primary school next week and some of them are going to help me.

Tony - your birthday's on June 7th; mines on the 5th and I always have a crop of potatoes by then. (I normally lift the first root in late May, just to test them!)

Oh well, after that boast I'd better get off to the plot tomorrow and get some in!

I have planted 2 Mimi's and 1 Arran Pilot today in a potato sack and put it in my (very small) rear porch - totally unheated!

Post by: Trevor_D on February 25, 2009, 17:28:52
Runner beans?? Are you a warlock or something??

But I always reckon to have 5 or 6 different veg: asparagus (of course, but no skill involved there!), carrots, beetroot, spinach, calabrese, peas, mangetout, French beans (not all of these every year, of course). Still trying to get broad beans, but haven't done it yet.

So that's tomorrow sorted - it's tattie planting!!

I've also got a hedgehog parked on the end of one bed! So I need some better weather 1) to dry the soil a bit...not too much or it's concrete and 2) so the hedgehog will wake up so i can sort that bed out.

Must make sure i have a suitable hedgehog home for next winter.

Today it has already poured down and the rest of the week doesn't look great but probably just as well because my OH drilled through the wall (where there shouldn't have been electrical cable...fortunately he had that circuit off at the time) and drilled through cable so we've lost a whole electrical circuit with all but one plug in the Kitchen and the washing machine, dishwasher, dryer and gas boiler all out of action. Guess who is going to have to spend valuable allotment time searching and waiting for an electrician! :(

Hi, corney kev. Definitely not a wind up. Bought them before Xmas and had them chitting on top of spare room wardrobe. Planted them about 6 inches deep in raised bed on 14th Feb with soil enriched with well rotted manure and some slow release fertiliser and covered bed with fleece. Once the green was through, pulled back the fleece on mild days and covered them over again when it was cold and at night. Also earthed up to give extra protection from frost. I live in Devon, so it is one of the milder parts of the country!

Some of them are getting flowers on & we have fleece on them for a few weeks. Do you think it's worth a FIRCLE. I love that word.

Been so busy at the plot, I'd lost track of this thread....

My Lady C didn't actually go in until March 1st - latest ever! But I picked the first lot last week (May 20th) just one plant did the pair of us a meal.  Second lot the day after, but they were a bit smaller, so I left them for a few days. Picked another lot yesterday.

Sorry, no pictures. Must pay Dan some more money.

(Also picking carrots from a tub in the GH, lettuce from the GH, over-wintered broad beans, asparagus and globe artichokes!)

What kind of yields are you guys getting from 1st earlies? I had a firkle (been waiting a while to use that word  ;D ) and mine, planted mid March have maybe 4 or so spuds on them at the mo. I know from my diary that I should be able to start digging them from mid June (a bit later than some of you guys), but was a bit disappointed with what I found. Is a lower yield (compared to mains etc)normal for 1st earlies?

Thanks

I only lift earlies as needed.

My yields so far, based on a single plant of each from the end of the row:

Riviera: 2lb 6oz/plant
Mimi: 2lb 2oz/plant
Dunbar Rover: 2lb 8oz/plant

No idea if that's good or bad. All my potato plants are huge, a good 3' tall, and the foliage reaching right over to the next row, many of my neighbours plants are under a foot. Not sure why.

I am going to stop reading the potato posts cos the green eyed monster is coming out of me.   I am a couple of weeks behind growers south of me, still the bright side is i will be digging up my earlies when you have moved onto the seconed earlies.

Dunbar Rover is a second early, couldn't resist lifting one, but I'll be leaving the rest for a while.

Well here they are: one rather neglected seed potato in a 10" (about 11 litre) pot produced this.

Not sure if that's a good result or bad...suspect it's a "could try harder"  :)
