Title: Thread Discipline
Post by: Admin aka Dan on January 01, 2006, 19:44:20
Hi All,

I have noticed that over time thread discipline has deteriorated, with more and more threads becoming general 'talking shops'.

Whilst I understand how easy it is for this to happen, it does make things rather difficult to follow some times.

Can I therefore ask that we try to keep 'on topic' with threads, and try to keep general chit chat in The Shed, and The Watershed.

Hope that is clear, and you don't think I am an ogre!

Cheers

Dan

I agree wholeheartedly with you comments Dan, and that is a genuine opinion, I am not creeping to the teacher !!! I have noticed this over a period, but felt it was not for me to comment. I think some light hearted banter is part of what this site is essentially about, but there comes a line as you have pointed out, and serious threads are being marred.

Thank you very much for addressing the issue.

Good move Dan. I am not against chit chat, but find it a little bothersome sometimes having to trail through it to get to usefull replies to a topic, particularly if i am short of time.

Dan pm'd me too. I think we all got it or at least should have.

Perhaps what we could all do if we are starting to wander off topic would be to continue in the shed/watershed with a link for followers to follow?

I generally plant them at around 6 inch spacing with canes although when it's a Grand Prix weekend I listen to more classical than modern music. On the other hand, you can always use roofing felt.

Sorry, I may have strayed a little from the point of this thread.  ;D

Title: Re: Thread Discipline
Post by: Garden Manager on January 02, 2006, 17:27:32
I think you have to look at it from Dans point of veiw. Lots of chit chat makes the forum bigger and more difficult to manage. He has a difficult enough time keeping things going for us as it is.

I am not saying dont chat just try and keep it to places like the shed and leave the other topics a little freer.

I think the idea of spliting topics or at least starting a linked chat thread in the shed is a good. Just needs a little dicipline thats all.
Title: Re: Thread Discipline
Post by: terrace max on January 02, 2006, 17:37:42
I'm not dissenting here. I can see that the place needs to be kept tidy. And it's your forum, Dan.

I'd just suggest that life/gardening isn't linear, like threads are, but organic - spreading like a web. So in a sense we're trying to get a square peg into a round hole here.

Take the digging thread which I know has hacked people off. (I think I got trolled a bit there, but whatever). One objection to digging is environmental. Environmental is political (unfortunately). So I guess it isn't too surprising we ended up where we did...

As for the general chit chat, waffle and nonsense - speaking as a major 'culprit', I think it was inevitable when things are slow outside. There's only so many times you can discuss what weeds taste good at this time of year. I imagine we'll all be too busy by March to gossip too much anyway?

I guess you want a busy board all year round Dan?

And do you actually want apologies?

Ha ha Oz. On the topic of general banter (which IS a sub topic of this thread !) may I remind everyone that there is a chatroom which is available all the time and enables people to have a lighthearted or serious natter on all imagineable subjects, and so perhaps free up the threads from some of the simple conversational issues which have started to invade. I am not suggesting that the chatroom should be used instead of the threads, it is just another facility which is available ...

'Catch me if you can'.

I saw 'War of the Worlds' the other day. Can't stand Spielberg or Cruise usually. But it blew me away. Amazing depiction of the dynamics of a 'broken' family. Oh and some big - off Aliens too!

I have to say, I am in agreement with Tim on this.  I do my fair share of idle chit chat I know but at times it does get a little out of hand and my own little opinion re the Thread Discipline is that of Dan having the Pee taken out of him - albeit in a harmless, silly non offensive way (if that makes sense) but there has to be a place to draw the line?

More and more threads are starting off as one thing and turning into another for no other reason but loose chit chat.  I'm thinking for the more garden/allotment minded amongst us (and I don't include myself in that .... yet ....) it must be completely infuriating.

Before posting, maybe stop and think if it's relevant to the thread or not and if it's not, drag it somewhere else as was done with the Children and Work thread earlier this week?

Common courtesy is all.

 :)
Title: Re: Thread Discipline
Post by: terrace max on January 05, 2006, 16:11:50
Deviating from the thread inside the shed/watershed is OK isn't it? I thought deviating from the thread which was about deviating from the thread was just being ironic??

Can't see much to apologise for so far?

Noticed today the Crocus advert here. Presumably if Dan wants to fund this site he needs to demonstrate a certain membership and posting rate? Whatever you think of the content, the sheer volume of chit chat in the appropriate place must be a good thing if only to attract advertisers. Also indicative of healthy, happy site...??

Just guessing & not trying to be vexatious. Just won't apologise for reasons I don't understand...

:)  Yep, yep, can't say I disagree with any of that TM.  Certainly appears to be what The Shed and Watershed are for and I myself am more than capable of inane drivel 24hrs a day, lol.

Was referring to Dan's Thread Discipline thread if you see what I mean?  :)

And quite a few of the other targeted subjects suffered a similar fate, think that's why Dan posted what he did?   :)

yes i understand about the thread discipline on other parts of the board.

But i dont see how when he says chat only in the shed, not elsewhere and then we do, in the shed, all be it on that thread it gets locked.

To me, locking a topic is just doing the same as removing it from the board all together, and apparantly it isnt done very often (removing threads) but its being done regularly i see.

Hear what you say Petals. And you know as well as I do that none of the chatterers wants to disrespect Dan. I think he's got a sense of humour too?

I agree that targetted threads should be observed elsewhere. But equally I can't believe that any member with more than say 1000 posts has ALWAYS stuck to the point in every thread  ;D

I think people should say what they mean. If they don't like the people involved in the banter, in it's proper place, that's different from the banter itself being wrong.

Dan locked the thread......................we got the message.........................why start it all up again

As far as I can see except for on one occasion banter was reserved to the Shed and Watershed and on the one occasion it wasn't all it took was a gentle prompt to remind us!

I have apologised once and never ever want to offend but surely as we get busier and spring rolls on the banter will naturally cease anyway won't it ............we'll all be too busy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Have to agree with Tim.  Dan was pointing out the need for thread discipline, which we have  probably  all been guilty of one time or the other, but for people to deliberately disregard his topic and seemingly wander off in a variety of unrelated chatter seems a bit of a slap in the face to him.  I think he has been very patient but let's not test it too much.  busy_lizzie

Please don't shoot me but I feel a lot of the chat that takes place should rather happen in the chat room. Remember that only a certain amount of space is available for storing all the threads, the more chat there is means the more older stuff has to drop off the edge into that black hole, some valuable information may be lost. I often go back 1 year to see what was being discussed as it's relevant to what's happening now, if there's too much chat there may come a point when you can't go back as far as a year, that would be a great shame. There is another forum where this has happened, a great loss in my opinion. I'm not sure if this is right but if the forum becomes loaded with too much chat does that mean Dan has to upgrade to a host that will carry the extra load, at an extra cost to Dan, I wouldn't want to contribute to more expense for him. And about the advertising, I think the advertisers work on number of hits through the links rather than how much posting is done on the forum, I have advertised here in the past and the reports I got through email were number of hits rather than how busy the site was.

I have strong opinions about this, but I am keeping them to myself. I am enjoying the chat room and the people that are currently using it.

You may have noticed that I am not posting as much anymore. The fact that this thread exists at all should spell it out.

The only person I have any interest in discussing my views with is Dan.

No need for over-the-top type reactions here.  No knee jerking needed when all is being asked is to stay on topic in the relevant forums/threads  ;D

And I have to ask, Derek, if the only person you want to chat with on here out of the hundreds is Dan, then why are you still here?  Don't really get that one?  Pardon my ignorance. (not that Dan isn't a lovely fella I might add before I get jumped on!)

You are doing it again.

The only person I  will discuss my views with is Dan, that is nothing to do with who I want to chat to.

Oh eck.

I find it fascinating that the same few words can be taken in so many different ways by so many people.

Let me make a few things clear,

I do not want or expect (or have indicated I would like) an apology from anyone.

I locked the thread discipline thread as my reading of it was people were just continuing the thread for the sake of it - I will reopen it, merge it with this one, and allow you all to continue.

I don't think what I have asked is out of order, if you feel it is, contact me and let me know, I have only received positive messages about the request.

Now,

GO  ;D

Apologies if you feel I have twisted what you said, but I can assure I do not think I have.  My post was not out of spite - I asked you a civil question to a point you raised yourself.  You said you only felt you wanted to discuss matters with the administrator of the board so I asked you why you still used the board if you were not interested in talking with any of the other members.  I dont see that as rude or unreasonable?

And as far as attacking you personally?  I left the playground a long time ago, suggest you do too.

Another board I'm on has a special section where threads of permanent interest go (it's quite easy for a moderator to move them from one board to another) and where banter isn't allowed. Other threads are eventually deleted, and anyone can ask for a thread to be put on the permanent board, with the banter, if any, deleted. Something like that might answer the concerns about threads disappearing.

oh crikey not another thread of arguments!  :-[

Why do all long term areas of communication ultimately end in discord and the manager of the site end up piggy in the middle?

My own theory is that without body language, tone of voice and being able to see the twinkle in someones eye (or glare!) that the context or tone in which something is written is only as relevant as the mood or current thoughts of the reader.

Is that relevant here?  I think so because that is what leads to misunderstanding and mistrust.  Can also result in very long drawn out 'banter'.

This forum seems to have lasted very well so Dan can't have being a doing a bad job and probably hasn't changed that.  That only leaves us lot to have changed.......and after all, presumably the forum is managed for us as much as anything else.   So if anything has to change it needs to be us!    Dan I expect is only bowing to wishes or hopefully the common good.

.....and as a joker and side conversationalist none of that is not directed at anyone specific as it includes me!  So shall try to abide by the wishes to avoid to much side banter and jocularity in the 'serious' threads.

Iain  please can we all have a HAPPY New Year... ;D

You hit the nail right on the head Busy Lizzie.
Nothing wrong with 'aimless wandering' (to use Terrace Max's words) in the Shed but why not start a thread of general banter or aimless wanderings. Why go way off topic on someone elses thread and not only that but wander aimlessly, on a thread that has a clear topic? Start your own thread but don't sabotage other people's, it's disrespectful.

Title: Re: Thread Discipline

i do agree with you Ina it is very disrespectful , bit some times one thing is said and it leads to another and before you know it the thread has completey disappeared , i don't think or believe that any body would sabotage someones theard , i am a banter and gone off of loads of threads , but have never done it on purpose , so i will behave in future and just keep my banter to the shed , and see if Dan could move lottie laughters files to the shed  as it is an old flame

Cheers

Dan

To get back on topic!!!

I am admin on a forum, and we never let our threads go off topic.

maybe fish get caught in the undercarriages when doing emergency landing on water?? maybe they have to take that account when planning....

other than that not a clue.  ;D  maybe RC was just showing off his quoting ability.

Isnt the way this thread has developed exactly what dan was trying to avoid by starting it in the first place?

Its just become another chat thread hasnt it? 3 pages added (at least )since i last looked at it.

Dan, you should have posted your request and then locked the thread mate. Now look whats happened  :o ::)

The problem is Adam, what happens if someone clicks on  this expecting to read about Thread Discipline and comes across what appears to be private chatter amonst a few people that is totally unrelated, it means they have to troll way back to catch the gist of the original thread.  ??? busy_lizzie

If they have not read this thread before then the new button will take them to Dan's first post and the early jist of the thread.  If they have read it before then they will know what they are entering and that the thread has moved on.

yes but the original thread is fine, and that is what they will see.  not like its a question so people will be looking for answers and be searching through endless pages of chatter for the answer. the gist of what happened is in the first post.

Title: Re: Thread Discipline
Post by: redimp on January 07, 2006, 18:24:57

Cheers

Dan

Consider it done - as well as a few lilies while your at it.  ;)

Now for a bit of pig braiding, goat wanging and wellie riding   :-\

But its still not 'On Topic' is it. A thread about 'Thread Dicipline' should - in my opinion - be about just that. If you wish to go off on one  then start a new thread.  ;D ;)

I think the point is Richard, that in the Shed we can give up the pretence that it's possible - or even desirable - to stay on topic at all.

Then whats the point in seperate topics TM? Lets just have one big topic with no divisions and see how we get on?

Title: Re: Thread Discipline
Post by: undercarriage plan on January 07, 2006, 19:04:37
I'm sorry if I've upset you, Richard, I just can't see the problem. This is chit chat and it's in the shed? I trust Dan and he joined them together and said now off you go, and I am? I don't see that anyone is being harmed. I have been very well behaved elsewhere and have stuck to topic. To be honest I  don't see why this is a problem. :-\  Dan said not to insult, I never would, can't spell half the insults anyway, I suppose I just wish this thread would drop, but keeps getting pulled up again....anyway, I'm back on topic!  :-X
Title: Re: Thread Discipline
Post by: terrace max on January 07, 2006, 19:09:42
Just picked the first decent sized topic in 'Edibles'. In under two pages (and post-Dan's request) the topic covers earwigs, photo prowess, seed quality and , oh yes, aubergines...!!

I'm sorry but I can't see staying on topic as realistic or desirable. Sure the banter should be confined to the shed but to complain about it in here is - errm - odd.
Title: Re: Thread Discipline
Post by: redimp on January 07, 2006, 19:15:01
Those complaining will probably find that because 'Please delete' and 'Thread Discipline' have become chatting threads that threads elsewhere (and other threads in The Shed) stay on topic.  We are saving the frivolity for these two threads and nowhere else.  Those complaining have been in and out of here, no what this thread is about, so if they do not like it, stay out of the thread.  Its a bit like complaining about telly programmes - there is always the off button.

Ooo, I meant to jump on this at an earlier stage.  Not this particular message, but the subject matter.

I don't know if you all know, but I recently discovered (am a bit sloooow) that there is an 'ignore member' feature (no, not an ignore member's feature....fnarr fnarr) in your profile preferences so if there is an A4A member or members whose posts are driving you up the wall or simply posting too much chit chat etc etc, stick them in the ignore list and voila!  no more being faced with annoying posts when you come onto the board!  I'm now using it and jolly glad that I am!

Could also help to diffuse heated situations and ...praps a number of you who PM'd me lately might now like to use it too?!  (not against me though I might add .... beg.... ;D )

Hope this is of help to someone :)

However if you were searching for an answer to a particular question/problem and were short on time wouldn't it annoy the pants off you if you had to trawl through a load of irrelevance?

It is perfectly possible IMO to keep it on topic, and I am not alone in this opinion, despite those who have 'posted against me'.

As far as i am concerned the shed is the best place to duscuss it since it is the part of the forum for discussing NON SPECIFIC (ie non gardening/covered in other areas) topics.

Ooo, further investigations into my A4A settings revealed to me that I can a) be notified by pop up when I have a new message (I did get emails once upon a time) and b) store a copy of any sent message in my outbox by default and not have to remember to tick the little box each time.

Blimey, I am a bit of a ditz where these things are concerned!  Both very handy little doodlies indeed.

I shall post this in the hope that nobody becomes offended by my wish to change the personal preferences of my message system  ;)
