Greenhouse help !!
« on: May 27, 2005, 14:51:06 »
I have a new (3days)small greenhouse.

After it was erected 2 hours later the temp reached 120F despite louvres and vents and of course the door being open.

I have now purchased green exterior shading and this has helped a bit. Today 27/05/05 it is down to 100f.

Can any one help with ideas to keep it cool and give me some idea as to max temp popular plants eg fuchsia could  take.

As I am a complete novice (I mean complete!) any help or guidance would be much appreciated. ???

Try watering the paths - will make it more humid, but should make it a little cooler too

tried this damping down and it does help.

I had 30 degrees today about 90F, door open and two windows. Also shading on. I think its cooler with plants in, don't know why but its cooler now full than it was empty. I guess it must be the watering! You can always take a side panel out during the summer.

I know you have already put on green shade netting, but is it touching the glass?. If you can find a way of keeping at least an inch space between the glass and the netting, you will cool down your house even more.  What you are trying to do with the netting is prevent the suns heat from heating the glass, it is more effective if the glass is isolated from the shade. Hth.
Otherwise you will need to remove some of the glass at back of the house (usually the top pane) and leave the door open.
Gardening is the great leveller.

As you may have seen, jack, I have a capillary bench. This takes the damping down of paths a stage further because it's continuous. It does seem to help.

Electricity?  You've seen the chat about solar & batteries?

I have seen the solar chat.

It seems a bit ironic that we are talking of solar to cool the house that is heated up by the d****d thing in the first place!!

try a product called coolglass that you paint on the glass and then remove it in winter
takes over your life doesn't it
