Monty Don - Sponsored by garden centres?
« on: May 06, 2005, 22:20:40 »
I've just watch the current BBC golden boy of gardening spend an hour planting out beeding plants - some admitted by himself not even hardenned off

I think he did say something like "if there's cold weather you need to take precautions"

Seriously, knowing how many slavishly follow his lead, the man is totally irresponsible at this time of year! >:(

I just found it incredible that he was planting out all those plants so early, the poor people that waste their money because they plant out too early, I feel really sorry for them.  It is bad enough that the garden centres stock the stuff so early without him encouraging it!

I was really impressed with a local nursery who said to a customer it was too early for bedding plants last week!

Hmmmm....ive just been watching Monty too and was thinking exactly the same thing.

Every year i see people in garden centres buying bedding plants far too early and if you listen in their to conversations (as i tend to do ;)) ...they are chatting about popping the plants into the garden that afternoon ,when its the middle of april or whatever.

Garden centres should really have more warning signs warning their customers that these plants need protecting for a good while yet.

I rarely watch GW now as I find there's not enough information about things I don't know - and too much incorrect information about things I do know (the bedding plant issue being a case in point), research is sloppy and many subjects are simply skimmed over. Increasingly I get the impression that Monty Don would rather be somewhere else and is longing for parole from GW.

I thought the main content of the bedding plant thing was to show what's available and new this year.  Give viewers credit for some intelligence please

How about this?

I'd like to see 17 years of re-runs of Geoff Hamilton.
Good gardening!

I don't think Monty is attractive, well not with all the gear he wears.  If he's pricking out in the greenhouse he'll have all the gear on and his kneepads, ugh  ;D

Hi, I'm afraid I have to agree. Poor old Monty leaves allot to be desired ::) I do think the program has gone down hill. I did think to start with it would be a breath of fresh air, not so! !  :-\ Green is good, but I think they have lost it somewhere along the line.  :(

Kitty you have voiced by feelings exactly!   used to so look forward to GW, but it is not the same now.  Sarah was a breath of fresh air on Friday with her down to earth tips (sorry) - most people can't afford all the fancy things they seem to do these days.

HAHAHAHAHAHA!  Phew, glad I wasn't alone.  As I watched him merrily planting away, I said to Ava, 'Monty isn't expecting any more frosts then' and then he went on to tell us to keep an eye on the weather!  Of course it depends where in the country you are, and how sheltered you are.  I have had tender stuff out now for a couple of weeks and all is well, so long as we don't get snow!!

I have always though GW has more money than sense.  Guess they are trying to put our licence money to good use.  I mean, 2 tree ferns!!!!!
