swallows
« on: April 13, 2005, 23:52:27 »
Has anyone seen a swallow yet?

I have been watching for them and wait their arrival.  They are one of my favourite birds and look forwarad to their return  every year which is usually around the 27th April.  No doubt some of you in the South will have seen them already.

They nest under my eaves so hopefully the pair will return this year again.  I think they are fantastic birds.

I keep looking but haven't seen any yet in East Anglia. I noticed that there was a sort of Southerly air stream this morning, so shouldn't have to wait much longer.

Non here in North Wales Carol.  Cant wait though I love swallows too.  They come a lot more since we have built the pond, think they like the little insects that fly over it.  Heard an owl last night letting youngest daughter out.  Couldn't tell you what kind but it was a really loud twit twoooooo.  ;D Lovely.  The other thing we get a lot of in the summer late evenings is bats.......swooping over the pond for insects just like the swallows.
Take time to stop and smell the flowers.

How do you know it was a daughter? I thought young owls all looked alike.

Hello Carol     I saw the first swallow of the year today here in North Somerset about three pm. There was only a single bird. About five minutes later I saw my first sparrow hawk.  LesH

Swallows here this morning, at least four of them, now all we need are the martins to make a real Spring.
The Cuckoo was sat on the roof at 6.30 am and the Greater woodpecker is courting in the Apple tree.
Now all we need is a bit of warmth!
Gardening is the great leveller.

Still looking for them here in the North East.  Surely can't be too far behind everyone else.  They are such lovely birds; I keep searching the skies for their lovely circling and swooping.  Perhaps when I am out and about this weekend I might spy one.  Home garden on Saturday and lottie on Sunday, weather permitting.  Happy weekend all you a4ayers.  :) busy_lizzie
