Tree onions?
« on: April 02, 2005, 20:04:30 »
Can anyone help? My neighbour, who is now in his seventies, moved down here many years ago from the Midlands, He often says to me he wishes he had brought some of his tree onions with him.  He hasn't seen any in years, and I get the feeling he would love me to grow some in my lottie. However, I have never heard of them, have no idea where I could buy any or how big they get (trees?!), conditions.... you get the picture. I will send in big pic if I ever find any to grow. Thanks. Lottie x

The easiest solution is just to type 'tree onion' into Google. You will get a lot of links and pictures as well. They appear to be related to the 'walking onions' discussed in another thread.

At first I thought it might be an April fool gag, but was willing to investigate via google first, glad I did.

TREE ONION Allium cepa proliferum P E 60cm. An intruiging herb which bears clusters of small onions on the tips of its stems; delicious in salads or as pickles. The foliage may be cut throughout winter.
