The Lergy ( a cautionary tale)
« on: March 27, 2005, 12:09:04 »
I was clearing out a load of compost last week and was bitten by a beasty of some kind ( we think maybe a spider ) Didnt notice much at first but over 24 hours started to develop blotchy swellings all over.  The swellings then became hives which all joined up and became urticaria... I was covered over arms, legs, body and other unmentionables  :o  The pain/burning/itching was unbelievable.  Doc prescribed antihistamines which took about 36 hours to start showing any effect.  The rash and swelling has now settled down although I have seen a couple of minor flare ups but it now seems to have settled down.   The next thing to happen was awful joint pain.  Hands, wrists and elbows became swollen, hot and painful......  more tablets from the doc.  So I am just taking things slowly and easy today and tomorrow before I (hopefully) return to work Tuesday.  As the swelling has subsided I noticed a puncture wound (which is still inflamed) on the back of my hand.
This is the top of my leg as the hives started to spread.
Take time to stop and smell the flowers.

Looks very uncomfortable Mimi! I hate picking up and moving plants in large pots, the spiders always seem to hide underneath them. Yesterday I moved a large pot and there was a huge spider underneath it, it was already squashed like a pancake.

I got something similar to that when I ate some "blackberries" while out walking.  The purple rash was like that and it woke me in the night scratching.  I thought I'd been bitten by something in bed.  I put the light on to find my covered in this hideous purple rash (not pink)

I worked for a (or plant of that family) and said that very often dogs charging through brambles get similarly afflicted

Horrid though isn't it.  Try not to scratch  ;D
I came, I saw, I composted

Many thanks for the words of kindness.  Thankfully the urticaria has now gone but I did also have a few days of hot, swollen and painful joints too.    I don't do 'sick' very well.  I hate being poorly  and get very grumpy and moan all the time  ::)  Typical nurse.  Anyway I'm back to 100% (which is only about 70% these days  ;) )  Hopefully will be able to get up to the allotment on my days off.

That looks really painfull.  I saw a program recently that showed a woman who was weeding, naked in her garden  :-[ - not sure what plant it was. But she had a very bad reaction in the sunlight.  Apparently, this particular plant can give anyone a bad reaction - blister, rash etc,  if the skin is exposed to sunlight.  Personally I keep covered from head to toe.  I once wore shorts whilst weeding and was bitten by something.  The bruise was the size of a tennis ball and took months to go down, I have never worn short since.

Get better soon.

Oh Mimi, only just found this post ! That must have been soooo painful !  I wonder what could have caused it !?

You certainly came up in a terrible rash and I really hope you have now completely recovered.  ;)

I was planting some potted ivy yesterday and something bit me to death on my arms and legs.  As you, it is itchy and stings, etc.  Nasty insects of some kind. >:(

Good luck !!  ;)

Enjoy today to the full.  You are not sure of a tomorrow.
