The Heaviest and Best Veg @ Harrogate Show -18th Sept 2015
« on: September 19, 2015, 14:39:32 »
I had the pleasure of visiting Harrogate Autumn Show yesterday and I thought you might like to see some of what was on offer.

As always there was loads of stuff to see and photograph so I have just chosen a few to show guys, I hope you like my selection.

Heaviest Potato-1.81 kg (3lb 15.5 )oz

Heaviest Tomato-2.42 kg (5lb 3.3 oz)

Heaviest Leek-6.2 kg (13.67lbs)

Heaviest Onion-6.615 kg (14.58 lbs)

Heaviest 3 Onions-17.75 kg (39.12 lbs)

Heaviest Cabbage-24.2 Kg (53.35 lbs)

Heaviest Pumpkin-123 kg (271.17 lbs)

There were many more " Heaviest Veg" although I would have to perhaps "The Ugliest Veg" might have been a more appropriate title, so I didn't bother photographing these!

The following exhibits were among the best on display so again I just photographed what I liked!

I hope you like them too:

5 Kelsae Onions;

Trugs of Veg:

One of the Master Gardener class exhibits:

Intermediate Carrots:

Stump Rooted Carrots:

Long Carrots:

Pot Leeks;

Blanch Leeks;

Parsnips:

Collection of Veg:

Three Exhibition Onions:

So now  I am looking forward to next year to see the stuff you 'newbie exhibitors' are going to grow  :icon_cheers:

ps when I get some of the other pictures I took sorted out,  I will either make a blog or slideshow and upload them for you to see....Tg

Love the trugs of vegetables.  Wish I could grow carrots like those, mine the size of my thumb.  Not sure about the heaviest vegs, I just like eating mine small. Interesting pictures, thank you for sharing.  :sunny:

I love the trugs too.
Been hearing about this genetic testing for the heaviest tomato,anyone know what they are testing for? At first I thought water, but that would not need a DNA test?

There's something intrinsically hilarious about giant vegetable exhibitions!

Spoke to a friend who answered the question for me.  I never realised that the tomato variety was part of the schedule, so that's what the test is for.

They are fantastic photos TeeGee, thanks for putting them up!

I loved the trugs. Can't imaging growing enormous veg like that, I don't think I have the patience, but it's fab to see them. Pot leeks are something I've never seen.

Hi all

Glad to see you have liked my pictures, will put more up sometime later this week.

Well yes but not as good as these these.

I suggest you do a google on how to grow pot leeks and you will me amazed what these guys get up to.

They are a bit of a secret society until you get to know them and then get your hands on some of the seed they use.

Unlike blanch leeks which are grown for there long stems, pot leeks are grown for their girth and the blanching must not be more than 6" long (150mm)

In fact they have a set of tables where they measure the girth and they can then calculate the volume of the leek, and that can be quite often as much edible material as a blanch leek.

I am trying a variety of pot leek from Kings this year and I have not given them any better treatment than my other varieties and I am quite impressed with the results to date.

God only knows what they would have been like if I had nursed them like the pros do.
