Topic: Early potatoes

I planted mine out today, the soil was so warm it was gently steaming as I turned it over in the sunshine this morning I planted four different varieties in my raised beds; Jazzy, Charlotte, Saxon, Nicola......I plant them in pots and earth hem up straight away.

Is it your first year growing Jazzy, I wondered how they taste and if they do as well as their description?

Not outside, but I have 2 bags of Dunluce and Charlotte started. Am not growing Lady Christl this year to give Dunluce a go - am hoping I don't regret it...

Otherwise, in no particular order I have Red Emmalie, PFA, Alouette, Snookie, Highland Red, Vitelotte, Sarpo Mira, Sarpo Axona. Not many tubers of each though. Unlike Dunluce and Charlotte, which will be a tight squeeze in the space I had had planned!

I've grown Dunlace a few times before, very nice tasting potatoes, perhaps not as quick to crop as some?

I picked up some flower buckets from Morrisons yesterday to put a few earlies in. Your buckets look a good size, any idea how many litres they hold? Are they planted one tuber per bucket?

Deb P  you said you plant in pots and earth up straight away  ? Do you put the pots in the ground and cover them up ?

My first year of growing Jazzy, I was tempted by the description. I only have room for 40 plants this year so have err stuck to 10 plants of 4 varieties. Charlotte and Nicola are firm favourites that I grow every year, I trial two new ones just to see if they can improve on my favourites. I only grow early/ 2nd earlies to avoid blight and to use the ground again later in the year to make the best use of my space.

Sounds a good plan, I should do something more like that and give a miss to the heartbreak of Late Blight each year. Although I'm growing several LB resistant varieties again this year, hoping they are as good as the blurb.

I haven't planted anything yet; I need to build another raised bed first. Probably two, but if it takes too long I can start some more in buckets. I grew ten lines of TPS last year, and I've got loads of tubers from that which need planting out, as well as the tubers from the seed swap and a couple of other vairieties.

Gosh, that's an informative thread! Silver leaf do you eat a lot of spuds?! 12 varieties blimey

I'm only growing two or three tubers of each, so it's not as many as you'd think! ;)

Let's see - 32 plants in a raised bed, 30 in straw bales, and then an unknown number of TPS plants (but only about 6sq ft of them).

It's more than I'd usually grow but I need to assess my new varieties.

think they hold around 40-45 litres each and i have some bigger ones which hold around 50 i plant 4/5 tubers for earlies then 3 in each for second earlies and main crop and 4 of each in the bigger tubs  planted up 15 so far just second earlies and main to go another 20 tubs to plant out over the coming weeks hope this helps
