Tomato seeds
« on: October 06, 2012, 10:56:23 »
I’ve been having a think about the virtual tomato seed swap, which has grown a fair amount, but not enough seeds are going out and being shared. This is a shame as there is already quite a collection of varieties available and this collection is not something I just want to sit on and hold on to, it’s for sharing.

Jeanninie sent me a lovely parcel of seeds earlier in the year which I’ve added in and I’m going to have more varieties to add when I get a chance to sort through my own seeds. So far there is a fair mix of types and varieties, both hybrid, heirloom and open pollinated.

I’m thinking rather than a straight swap of seeds, it could be more like a resource in the sense of people just making requests if they fancy trying varieties, sort of more like a seed store or perhaps a library? It would be fantastic for people to continue to donate varieties if they have them available or perhaps seed could be saved from their plants grown and then sent back to keep a stock of fresh seed and continue to build our stock?

Any thoughts?

What a lovely idea.  How do we get our name on it.

There won't be a need to put your name down as such, just take a look at what is available and make your selection of what you fancy. https://sites.google.com/site/virtualtomatoswap/
Same as before you will need to send a SAE for the seeds.

Great idea. I will have a rummage through my tomato seeds and see what I can donate, I really do have far too many.....
If it's not pouring with rain, I'm either in the garden or at the lottie! Probably still there in the rain as well TBH....🥴

I like the idea of a library, loan a seed and bring it back to the library a year later after a grow-out.  Not possible with F1s of course.

Somehow it would be good if the seed swap had a mechanism of keeping varieties alive and in circulation?  Especially the rarer and non-commercial ones?

It is a great ressource - thank you for administrating it JayB.

I have about 120 varieties on my current list I am sure some of you have other interesting varieties I haven't got if there are any you want to swap I would be happy to do some swaps if I have enough seed.
