Wood chip for paths, cheap from the council...
« on: September 28, 2012, 19:58:48 »
Just incase anyone is interested, I managed to get large bags of woodchip from my local council for £1 a bag this week.  I used it for making paths at my allotment.

Our council don't advertise that you can buy it from them, I only found out via word of mouth.  They were also selling logs too.

I thought I'd post this on here, as if people on here were aware that some councils do this, then it would be easy to ring your own councils up to ask?

You can see how I used the wood chips to make two paths, on the link below:

We get ours free

The parks department get rid of the shreddings on each of their allotment sites to save it going to landfill

Perhaps you could get this message over to your council

I contacted a local tree surgeon who dropped off over 2 tons for £30.  I waited around 10 days for delivery because he did not want to give me chippings from diseased trees he had cut down which I thought was kind of him.

We get wood chip free, and compost from the Council, but not very frequently lately.  Your Site Sec. may be able to find some freebees for you.  We also get horse manure from the stables.

Lol, we don't get anything free from our allotment site or council....is our council the only one that actually charges for it?

We get free wood chippings and logs and even manure from local stables (although we do give them a donation towards transport)

We also get ours for free from a local tree surgeon. I was told that we can get free manure too but I have only see one lot on our allotment since I took it on and not yet seen any new deliveries.
