Only one browser window
« on: February 23, 2005, 16:02:32 »
Never had this before, it started with this new 'puter. I go to a second site only to have my first site killed off. I'm only able to open one site at a time. Anyone else had this problem?

with opera and mozilla (incl. firefox and camino) you can use tabbed browsing, i.e. all the 'windows' get opened in the same window, and you flick between them via the tabs.
miles better than internet explorer :)

I use firefox too.

Does this help?
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;281679

assuming you're using IE.

Thanks all. Using IE. It's only since I got this 'puter that I can't open more than one window.
I'll give NattyEM's reg key setup a go.
Thanks.

Changed the ones that looked likely. I can now get 2 pages open but trying for a third changes one of them to the default page. Still, that's better than nothing for now.

Whoops. Spoke too soon, back to one again!

Just another wee plug for Opera - I've got 17 windows open at the moment!  And SO much faster than IE.  Firefox is good too, but not such a friendly, flexible window system?

All best - Gavin

firefox and mozilla (and camino) all worked with tabbed browsing. i assume that is what you mean, gavin? otherwise, your desktop will look very messy with 17 windows open all over it ;)

PS: did you notice the subtle plug for the mozilla suite there...;)
tbh, anything is better than IE

Oh yes!  When I was on dialup I used opera because its really easy to toggle pics on and off speeding it up no end!  But both opera and firefox are much faster than IE.  I find firefox just as easy really, not much to choose between the two of them.  Tabbed browsing is less relevant though if you're on xp as it shuffles all the windows up into a list when you get too many anyway.  But yup still easier :)  Why anyone would choose IE as their primary browser I have no idea!

That's good to hear, Ken.  How did you solve it, I would be very interested to know?

Glad you are sticking with IE, I too use IE and like it.  Never had any probs with it.  My husband is a puter whizzy and he's quite happy with it too  :)

Glad you're back to normal, Ken....I prefer IE.... I have all the favs on the desk top as single click..easy as pie ...but wouldn't mind multiple windows. Previously download ed Mozilla but so slow, they embedded so much stuff I had to get  in CCleaner .

How did I solve it:
Well, I still can't click on IE a second time for a second page, but Ctrl + n gets me a new page.
(File, New, Window, will do it ofcourse but that's a bit long winded.)

To edit a website you either need a webpage program like frontpage or dreamweaver (there are lots of others too) or you need notepad and a knowledge of at least html (and php or whatever your website it built in) you also need to know your ftp details and have an ftp client to upload your pages.

We wern't slating people for using IE, just saying that a lot of people don't even realise there is an alternative, let alone an alternative that might be better!  The reason for this is because IE comes with your computer (usually) so people don't bother looking elsewhere.  Which of course is great for microsoft.
