Waited for 8 1/2 years and......
« on: March 05, 2012, 23:00:19 »
I finally got an allotment!

I've been on 2 waiting lists to get this far. On the first (in Cheshire) I waited 5 years only to get offered a plot a week before I moved to Hampshire. Undeterred I put myself onto the waiting list here (only a year, they said) 3 years later and I finally have a little patch of heaven & hardwork to call my own! My son is over the moon. He's been growing veg in our tiny garden since before he could walk, but we've always had shady gardens, so productivity is limited to say the least. Now we are slaves to a veg-growing playground without a patch of shade (bar that cast by the shed).

However, always had soooo much time to potter, but in my first year as a primary teacher, time is not a luxury I have any more. Bloomin' typical! But with people offering to muck in and my need to get a better work/life balance.....I think it's just what I need. And it's in pretty good nick, so not a hefty job to get 'back in action' - (I have pics on photobucket....just don't know how to share them).

I feel like I've won the lottery....but am also a bit daunted by the new challenge!

Fab! Well done you, if the pics are on photobucket then get them on here, we love pics! Think of all the time you will have to do stuff in the summer when school holidays happen!

Here's my attempt to share pics: http://s228.photobucket.com/albums/ee216/creckless/My%20lottie/

Thanks for your kind messages. After such a long wait and having almost given up the ghost whilst battling to grow veg in shade....I need the confidence boost.

Congratulations :D :D

Now enjoy :D

I know how daunting it feels, but if you can do a little every day, then its amazing what can be done.  When the clocks go forward, it will make life a lot easier.

Hope your son enjoys it as much as you will. :D :D :)

Thanks for your kind messages. It is a half-plot which already has 2 strawb beds, raspberry canes, a few random leeks and a bit of kale in situ. Now just have to tackle the rest....

Hope you enjoy every minute. It's been heaven down on mine today constructing a new cold frame and drinking lots of hot drinks and banter with fellow allotmenteers. ;)

Hurrah! It's prepped and ready to go!

Had help when we'd tired of digging, in the form of a borrowed rotavator......which was too small for the job and harder work than digging. Luckily I have a lovely chap on the next plot who wheeled out his industrial sized rotavator and made light work of the whole plot! His drinks are on me tonight :) We spent another hour or so there (maybe more...hard to tell when you're busy) and raked and cleared any roots we could find.  Strawberry patches are almost fully weeded too, with help from my 'home neighbour'. Just need to sort out paths and get planting!

What a day!  ;D
