Best ideas for these, then..!
« on: February 17, 2005, 15:31:40 »
The council here have just changed all the 120 Ltr and 240 Ltr green wheely bins. The old-but-still-good ones are for sale for around £1.50 each. I have all sorts of ideas for some of them, what's your best ideas?

For forcing very, very tall rhubarb  ;D Sorry I'm in a silly mood today - must be all that fresh air and sunshine ::)

Seriously, wish I could get my hands on one - have seen some at the Council recycling depot so may ask!!

If you had a scarecrow and a large enough spring, you coul;d make a very large jack in the box.

Wormery?

Would need some sort of grid to keep the stuff (and worms) off the bottom, so they don't drown, and a tap on the front to draw off the "juice".

You can buy the worms, starter packs etc here: http://www.wigglywigglers.co.uk/ (and other places too I expect).

how would you get the rotted stuff out without emptying out the whole thing?  Not sure a wheelie bin is the easiest thing to cut a door into!

We (my brother and I)always planned to dispose of my parents (not for a long long time I hope) in their two wheelie bins, since we're both too tight for anything else!  (We were very little when we came up with the idea but it's stuck as a family joke!)

You could use a couple as storage bins. Our wheely bin doesn't let any water in so would be great as a mobile shed for storing potting soil, spade, fork.

See if you can use as a water butt like EJ does but also throw in a "bouque gani" of chicken poo to make your own liquid fertiliser. Cut a square of garden fleece. Pile some chicken poo in the middle and then bring the corners together and tie with twine. Throw that into the "water butt" and hey presto.

Love the idea of a giant jack in the box!  ;D

I picked up two of the biggy bins yesterday. Cost me £3 in total. Both in the back garden awaiting my thoughts. One will certainly be cut in half, the top with the lid will be part sunk and filled with manure to try for a mushroom or two. Later it will be used to force chicons. I'll fasten some sort of a handle to the bottom half and then I move stuff around the plot without having to do any lifting. Possibly OK as a weeding barrow.
The other bin will probably go behind the garden shed for storing mini propogators and the like out of season and out of the rain.
Might go for a couple more next week. If anyone fancies a trip to Antwerp with a big van......!

I use one for storing mature leaf-mould, works great, and easy to move around.

This is the bottom half of a 120ltr one. I'll probably fill it with mint.

Oh  :o  Very nice too !!

I was going to suggest you cut it 30cm high, stick it in the ground and fill it with water.  The froggies will love it !! ;D
Enjoy today to the full.  You are not sure of a tomorrow.

This one is the top half of a 240 ltr one. Buried up to it's neck, filled with soil and manure and then mushroom spawn. Later it will be used to force chicons.
