Weird Sweetcorn

We are growing Early Extra Sweet F1 sweetcorn and although they were a bit slow to start it looks like we may get some cobs to eat...
Today we've noticed something weird happening at the top of a couple of the plants - kernels are growing on the male flowers.

What's that all about?!?
???
Any ideas anyone?
Thanks in advance.
