How To Grow Winter Vegetables
« on: June 22, 2011, 14:22:02 »
I bought this book by Charles Dowding a month or so ago, Amazon £8.98. It is an excellent read, (as are his other books). It gives a useful calendar of what to do, handy for people like me!

P.S. No connection with CD!!

A no digger, sometimes! I certainly don't get in there with a large fork, or stand on it. Apart from when planting brassica. As for planting distances, I use CD as a guide, and then, because I am using 2.4 x 1.2m beds, I cram it in a bit tighter than I should!

I'm really impressed by this new book of Charles's, too. I haven't yet noticed conflicting advice, but maybe that shows what we A4A-ers already know - that there's often more than one way to do something (or maybe I need to read more carefully!  ;) ;D). The book is very well-designed and the photographs of Charles's garden really add to his first-hand accounts of what works for him.

I bought his Salad Leaves for All Seasons in Feb or March and, having followed the advice on growing in containers, haven't needed to buy salad leaves for about three months. Trouble is, I keep finding excuses to order seed for different salad varieties...

I'm not a no-digger, but am starting to experiment - if I can get good crops without getting creaky shoulders, it's worth a try!

 :)

I have his SALADS FOR ALL SEASONS. I think I will buy the winter vegetables one as I never seems to grow winter vegetables successfully.
