For over winter, I found that T&M First Early performed best: every set produced a solid onion with none bolting.  But there several other varieties: Radar, Shakespeare, Snowball, Japanese/Senshyu or Electric which is a red onion.  You could visit a garden centre which do pick your own and plant a mixture.  The Japanese onions are very popular.  Good luck.

I've had excellent results with Electric, they're in our local "pound shop" this year, 50 sets for 99p!
