I have one of the cheapy Spear & Jackson petrol strimmers from Argos - bought it a couple of years ago. Does anyone know what the fuel mix is (lost the manual of course!).

(125ml to a 5 litre can, if you're doing it in bulk. Ours came with a free mixing canister to make 600ml of fuel, which lasts no time at all, but gives a more accurate mix.)

It uses a 40:1 mix.

It also depends on the grade of 2-stroke oil - there are 2 grades so 1 will be 40:1 (50:1 equivalent for a chain saw I presume) and the other will be 20:1 (25:1 equivalent) - Stihl and Husqvana engines are the same for strimmers, chainsaws, and hedge trimmers.

We use 50:1 mix for all strimmers, chainsaws, leaf blowers and hedgecutters at work. BUT IT MUST BE THE PROPER OIL SOLD FOR THE PURPOSE, such as Stihl, and Husqvarna being the most common. With this oil and mix you get mush less exhaust smokeyness and better starting because your spark plug does not fowl up.

I've always used 20:1 for 2T engines.  Better to err on the generous side if you don't want to risk wrecking the engines.  40:1 sounds a bit risky to me.

The B&Q professional biodegradable oil in the dark blue/grey litre bottles is also a 50:1 mix. I mixed it 25:1 once and my stihl chainsaw hated it, wouldn't idle, had no power, smoked like crazy. Remixing it to 50:1 cured all the problems and I've had no problems since (now 5 years down the line). So make sure you know what grade of oil you're mixing.
