The weather for this spring
« on: February 02, 2010, 15:55:26 »
Today is Candlemas, the old version of twelfth night, half way between the winter and spring solstice. I hope you have all had a wet, cold, miserable day weatherwise. Because hard luck if the sun was shining in your area today.

If Candlemas be fair and bright, winter will have another fight. If Candlemas brings cloud and rain, winter won’t come back again.

Don't scorn there is an element of truth in some of these old rhymes and customs. I think I am more inclined to go along with the coincidences of the past which were noticed by the old folks for years and years. Than go along with a met office that forcast a barbecue summer and mild winter.

I should be OK then.  Here in central Belgium where they celebrate "Chandeleurs" with pancakes, we started off with overnight frost and snow, carried on all day with driving snow and now we've got rain and sleet and gusting winds and it's filthy out there.

On the other hand, the last 5 winters have gone on into April with the deep freeze, if not with snow, so I'll still hold back on seed sowing indoors until late March and will be putting black plastic on my veggie beds to warm them up for much hoped for April sun and planting out.

Well, we've had wall-to-wall rain here, so that bodes well.

Mind you, last year we had the worst snowfall for nearly twenty years, which should have meant a brilliant summer! (Perhaps the forecasters use the old sayings, to, and told us we were in for a barbeque summer....)

Groundhog day! Best left to the americans who are in denial about their proper history and the customs and traditions of the Native Americans.  They have to make up something about vermin.

I was originally talking about English customs and pastimes, which are far more interesting.

Grey cloud and rain here too,  :)
(tis a strange thing to smile about)
Please don't be offended by my nickname 'Mortality'
As to its history it was the name of a character I played in an online game called 'Everquest'
The character 'Mortality Rate' was a female Dark Elf Necromancer, the name seemed apt at the time and has been used alot by me over the years.

Now that is an opinion I can live with. :)
