Re-loading bump strimmer line
« on: October 22, 2009, 10:58:38 »
Oh I really do need your help - PLEASE    ;D ;D
It's driving me nuts!  Do you know of a foolproof way to re-load the line on a bump feed strimmer spool?  I keep trying and I am obviously not doing it right cos it doesn't feed out when I bump!    ::)
Any simply phrased instructions would be sooooooooooooo much appreciated   :-*

They don`t just feed when you bump.

Take the line in one hand and pull whilst pushing the strimmer head with the other.
Jiggle around and it will release---eventually.

Been there!!

Mmmm that might be what you do now - but when I first got the thing I could bump it and the line would feed out - now.......  :( :(    So, it has got to be the way the line reel is re-loaded and there has got to be a right way and wrong way of doing it. I've tried Google for the answer but have got nowhere. Any other pointers would be very welcome.

I've never found one that bumped out properly.

I had a lightweight electric Black & Decker for the garden, and that rarely did. I now have a petrol-driven McCollough and that never has (although in all other respects it's a very good machine). And the Society has a Spear & Jackson and that doesn't either.

At least, one chap did get the last one to bump out. He hit it so hard on a paving slab he nearly broke the thing!

I am so glad to read this thread.  I have one and I can't get it to bump either and him in doors as to take it to peices every time I use it.  I thought it was just me.  I get so much ear ache over this.  If anyone can come up with an answer I to will be really grateful.  ???

So, I am not alone then.....  ;D ;D  I have emailed Spear & Jackson asking if they could let me know how the line is meant to be loaded onto the spool......if they answer  ::), I will post the response.  I don't understand why they don't advise in the instruction pamphlet how the line should be re-loaded - if it makes a difference to the performance of the strimmer.
No tonybloke - of course I did not do this - does it make the bump mechanism work?  ;D

The instruction book with my strimmer actually tells me not to do any maintainance - even oiling!

If anyone has a Ryobi, mine is a Jk 23 I think, they have changed the head to a better type, it actually works, reving up and thumping down at the same time. Before I have to take the thing to bits to pull out a bit more line, never really worked from new. I lost the left hand thread screw in the grass of the old one, no good anyway and the shop ordered a new head. I found it was the same price as ordering over the web, because of delivery cost was not charged. It cost about £20. Difficult to get parts anyway and finding the right part number, the shop nearly ordered the wrong one.

One big supplier of equipment will not touch Ryobi anymore, said parts difficult to get and they are unreliable, nice to know once you have bought one, £300 or so.

I have a small Ryobi petrol strimmer(the cheapest that B+Q had) and the line head is clearly marked with the direction of rewinding. The coils have to be wound in opposite directions and the head rotates clockwise. So to avoid locking the coils up the lower coil is wound anti clockwise and the upper coil clockwise.Mine still works with a bump but sometimes fails as the diameter of the coils gets to about halfway when the centrifugal forces increase about x4(approx) !! Spares I buy from Ryobi Direct with no problems.

Hi all,

I wind the top part one way and the bottom part the other way. I put on as much line as I can so I waste less, given that I waste some at the end of every winding. I don`t expect it to work when I bump it so I don`t bump it. I just ease the spool out a little and pull what I need until it is even.

I have thought about removing the spool and replacing it with a blade.

Unfortunately the spool came off about a month ago and is lurking in my strawberry patch, as they die back I hope to be able to see it.
