BROWN LEEK LEAVES OK?
« on: October 06, 2009, 19:15:38 »
Hi all,

My leek leaves are browning and some drying up and falling off.
Most leeks I've harvested so far are OK, some are brownish at the base but pull off the first layer and they seem ok.
That said, most seemed to have stopped 'fattening', even with lots of well rotted manure.

Is there anything I can do? what's it called? should I be worried?

Thanks guys,

TD :-\

Hi,
There are probably other people know more about leeks than me, but as nobody has replied yet.......

Sounds like a bad case of rust, I've only had an allotment for 2 years and both years my leeks had rust.
Here is a link with a bit more...

I saw on other posts there is a problem with leek moth, but don't think that is the problem here.
Mine are not growing much either, thought maybe just the time of year, but am rater disapointed with the 'Autumn Giant', anything but giant, but reading the above article, I think I will give them a feed with tomato feed and see what happens.

One day of heavy rain, and I forgot about the month long drought ::)

I harvested 6 yesterday that had the onset of rust.  Removed the outer leaves.  Chopped some cabbage, carrots, parsnip, onions, swede and made a delicious soup.

Cheers, I was going to ask about leek rust spots, so its remove leaves and destroy, give them some tommie feed and hope for the best.    :-\     ;D ;D ;D
