White fly and spraying
« on: September 22, 2009, 09:46:28 »
All

I try to be as organic as I can but my brassicas are totally covered in white fly making them almost inedible and they are also suffering.  Is there anything I can spray to clear the fly and save the crop?  Any ideas are welcome - seems a shame to waste a whole bed of brassicas!

I use Dr Bronners soap on my white fly and it seems to work quite well. Its a natural soft soap that is organic. I use it around the house as a liquid soap shower gel etc... Last year when I had problem with white fly on my brussels and tried to buy horticultural soap at our local garden centre but they didn't have any. I looked online and decided that I didn't want to pay £6~7 for the p&P!! The Dr Bronners I used last year was my Lavender one ::) This year when I noticed some whitefly again I used my Eucalyptus one ::) I have to say that the Eucalyptus seems more effective. Maybe the lavender one was too relaxing for the whitefly ;D.
Dr Bronners is  sold in many health food shops. If it doesn't work on your whitefly use it in the bath its lovely  ;)

I have used Rapid. Doesn't kill bees or ladybirds.Have used the last of mine and can't seem to find a stockist that does it. Have been to wilkies, homebase and focus and none of them do it.

Yes - it's a bad year for them. But, being 'on the spot', I just shake them up regularly to annoy them & they do no damage.

Trouble with any non-systemic treatment is that they are mostly underneath - this makes contact V difficult.

i apply my sprays using a battery fence sprayer then you can under the leaves no problem and dont have to keep pumping the sprayer up.

Harvest your plant,  place it in a very dark place ( box) with a hole of sufficient size to let them escape and they will move to the light.............or so I am led to believe!

Seem to recall reading that somewhere!

I have to say; Yes! I get them but I never seem to be too troubled with them so I don't bother, but worth a try I suppose!
