Pickled onions & Gherkins

Anyone been successful pickling onions and gherkins, thinking of next year and the best varieties to use, :)

I found that after a slow start Borretana de Soto Aceti (apologies if thats the wrong spelling) did well. Sow them about 6-10 to a module in  24/trays in March, harden off once they're germinated and plant out with about 4" between the modules. They did nothing for ages then suddenly bulbed in July into a decent crop of 1-1 1/2" flat coin bulbs.
