has any one else noticed that the red onions are going to seed. There are four or five of us all with the same problem. maybe with the shock of temprature change from 25d to 12d out here in County Durham ha ha. has something to do with it. :( :(

I planted my red onions much later this year, in April, and touch wood they are growing very well and no signs of bolting. Perhaps that is an interesting change for next year? They were sets, Red Baron I think.

I grow Red Barron from seed and so far this year they are fine but the last two years they have gone to seed very early as have my Alicia Craig, I put this down to having two very wet years.

Hi all,
As has been mentioned ,when did you plant them? I have learned from another post on this site, NEVER plant red sets before early April. Or at least until after the clocks change. They do not like it! Apparently the day/night length needs to be the same or something lkie that ??? I planted mine early April and all 50 have grown away very well with no sign of bolting 8) smug moi?
Adrian.

Same for me - overwintered Red Baron doing absolutely fine. Overwintered Radar have the odd few going to seed. Both planted from sets on 25 October.

I've found red baron notorious for bolting, been using red karmen the last couple of seasons which are much better.

I just looked in my last years diary and I'd made a note NOT to plant red onion sets before April, but with no explanation why, I guess this thread tells me the reason ::)

You can buy red onion sets that have been heat treated....this process stops them from bolting ( going to seed)
