Whitening of leaves on brassicas/greens, what is it?
« on: April 01, 2009, 22:11:32 »
A few of my greens that are planted out have developed white edges to some leaves, (mizuna, mustard) or have simply adopted a slightly dusty, dull, whitish tinge to the leaves. (Purple sprouting broccoli seedlings). Could that be from low temperatures overnight, on occasion over this past week? Or is it something else? Wind burn? Or disease?
They are partly protected, i.e. I have put a bubble-wrap wind-break around them as it was so blustery. That's about 18" high, other than that, they aren't covered. We may have had a frost or near to one in the past week, but there are no other signs of damage.

The plants overall look like they'll survive, but have lost those leaves, and the PSB seedlings mostly look like they'll be OK.

Anybody know what it is?

If it is dusty it should be mildew but very unusual at this time of year... without I would say scorch either from sun or wind... both dessicate the new leaves   :-\

Ah, it's probably wind scorch then - it was very windy earlier this week. It's not mildew, it's the actual colour of the leaves that has changed. They'll pick up, I expect.
