Aquatic potatoes
« on: August 23, 2004, 20:36:39 »
It is my first year with an allotment this year. With all of the rain we have had my potato bed is literally under 3 inches of water. Does anyone have any advice regarding what to do with regards leaving them in the ground or digging them up. There are two varieties, Valor and Pink Fir Apple. I dug three plants up from the edge of the bed at the weekend (pink fir apple) and they were fine and tasted lovely but Iam unsure as to how long they may last under water. Advice please.

Did you earth the rows up as the tops grew.  This should help with drainage.

Don't know, but  would have thought that so much water would drown slugs, & drain away before any serious damage resulted. Unless your ground has a track record for flooding. And if so bad, it might be a little difficult to lift them?? = Tim
