Topic: turnips with beards

When I pulled out a couple of my larger turnips (Brora)I noticed they had "beards"- hundreds of small hairy roots.Does anyone have any ideas on what could be causing this ???

we've had this, no idea what causes it, we just cut them off, they seemed okay  :)
